The other half is you.
You're not just teaching a dog to perform tasks.
You're learning how to communicate, work together, and become a team that can navigate real life side by side.
That takes more than commands.
It takes a strong foundation, a dog who understands their work, and a handler who understands the dog working beside them.
At K9 Life, we build both.
Not every dog wants to be a service dog.
And not every dog who starts the journey will finish it.
Throughout the program, I’ll continue watching your dog’s confidence, health, temperament, development, and ability to handle the work being asked of them.
If something begins telling us this may not be the right path, we’ll talk about what I’m seeing and what the next step needs to be.
Because I’m not going to push a dog through service work just because that was the original plan.
The dog standing in front of us matters too.
Service dog training is built in levels.
Each one prepares you and your dog for what comes next, and we move forward when the team is ready...not because enough time has passed.
Build communication, everyday behaviors, handler skills, and the foundation your future service dog team will depend on.
Milestone: AKC Virtual Home Manners (VHM)
Take that foundation into the real world while building reliability around distractions and learning to work together in public.
Milestone: AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC)
Develop reliable task work around your individual disability-related needs while continuing to strengthen public access and everything your team has already built.
Milestone: AKC Community Canine (CGCA)
Bring communication, public access, task work, and real-life reliability together into a working partnership you can depend on.
Milestone: AKC Urban Canine Good Citizen (CGCU)
Every team moves at its own pace.
We’re not racing toward graduation.
We’re building a partner you can depend on for years to come.
Task work doesn’t wait until Level 3.
The foundation for it starts much earlier.
As your dog develops, we’ll look at what you need them to eventually do and begin building the pieces they’re ready for.
Some tasks can start early.
Others require more maturity, confidence, body awareness, or experience before we ask for more.
We don’t rush the finished task just to say your dog can do it.
We build it so when you actually need it, you can depend on it.
Every service dog team needs a strong foundation.
How you build it depends on how you want to begin.

You want to be part of the training from the very beginning.
You’ll learn alongside your dog as you build the foundation, public access skills, task work, and real-life reliability your team needs.

You want me to begin building your dog’s early foundation before gradually bringing you into the training process.
I’ll start developing communication, working habits, confidence, and foundation skills—then teach you how to continue building from there.
This is hands-on training.
You’ll be learning right alongside your dog.
We’ll work on what your team needs now while continuing to build toward what comes next.
Some sessions may focus more on your dog. Others may focus more on you.
But most will focus on how the two of you work together.
Because the goal isn’t just a dog who knows what to do.
It’s a handler who knows what to do with them.

Every owner-trained service dog team begins with Level 1 • Foundation.

AKC Virtual Home Manners (VHM)
Level 1 Foundation requirements
Most service dog teams develop over 18–24 months.
You enroll one level at a time and move forward when you and your dog are ready.
Before enrollment, you and your dog will complete a Service Dog Team Evaluation, either in person or virtually when appropriate.
Your future service dog lives and develops with me for three months while I begin building Level 1 • Foundation.
During that time, I’m responsible for your puppy’s daily care, training, development, real-world experiences, observations, and documentation.
But I’m also learning your puppy—what builds confidence, what creates frustration, how they recover, how they solve problems, and where they may need more support.
You’re not waiting on the sidelines until I hand you a trained dog.
As your puppy becomes ready, I begin bringing you into the training process.
Little by little, I do less.
You do more.
Because I may start your dog’s foundation.
But you still have to learn how to become the handler your future service dog needs.

Three months of professional Level 1 Foundation development, followed by the handler training and support needed to continue building your service dog team.

Three-Month Level 1 • Foundation
Additional levels enrolled separately.
Before your puppy’s stay can be scheduled, you and your future service dog will complete a Service Dog Team Evaluation, either in person or virtually when appropriate.
If your team is approved, you’ll receive the next steps for enrollment into Started For You™ Service Dogs.
